I design because it makes me happy even when it drives me absolutely insane. Every project I work on, every design I share, I learn a new technique, improve an old skill and challenge myself as a designer, both on and off the computer.

Currently, my style of design is an attempt at realism using a flat design, I try to create the main elements of my designs by crafting pseudo-realistic images using simple shapes and bright colors. Of course, this style doesn’t work for every design. When it comes to designs that are more text heavy, I’ve learned how to present a strong, yet minimalistic, visual hierarchy for the information.

 

I draw inspiration from the great typography and illustration of art deco, art nouveau, Bauhaus, futurism, and minimalism. I even attempt to use similar design techniques and tools because imperfections and visual texture can’t always be achieved on the computer.

 

I can’t explain my creative process – it changes with every project I receive and every place I work. Ideally, I would like to be able to sketch every design and have a written visual of my end goal, but not every job allows the time for it. I would like to have time to research and sketch and take notes before sitting at the computer, but that is a skill that has been spoiled throughout college.

 

The most important lesson I’ve learned as a designer is to listen. Listen to your clients, your boss, your friends, your classmates, your coworkers. Check your ego at the door and just listen. I’ve taken almost every project I’ve work on to someone for their advice or their thoughts; everyone may not be a designer, but they know when something is unpleasant to the eye. It’s important to learn from criticism, to fix what doesn’t work, and to succeed as a designer.
